Alcohol Marketing in Birmingham
Alabama had only 1.3 craft breweries per 100,000 adults of drinking age in 2025, ranking 50th, according to the Brewers Association, so a Birmingham taproom has room to stand out. For breweries, brewpubs, distilleries, wineries and bars, we handle websites, local search, social campaigns and email, and every piece gets checked against the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board's advertising rules.
Licenses and limits in Alabama
Brewpubs must serve food
Under Code of Alabama section 28-4A-20, a brewpub may brew up to 10,000 barrels a year, pour draft on site, sell up to 864 ounces per customer per day to go, and must operate a restaurant or otherwise provide food. A separate hybrid craft complex license lets one owner run a brewpub, winery and distillery on adjoining, walkable premises.
Advertising rules in every medium
ABC Board Rule 20-X-7-.01 applies to radio, print, billboards, clothing and the internet. Ads cannot depict people drinking or appeal to minors, contests cannot award alcohol, and refund or cents-off coupons that hinge on a beer or table wine purchase are prohibited. Prior approval is optional, but violations count regardless.
A small local field
Census counted nine brewery establishments in Jefferson County in 2023, six of them with 20 to 49 employees, plus three distilleries and 67 drinking places. Statewide, the Brewers Association tallied 48 craft breweries producing 80,869 barrels in 2025.
Selling within the rules
Lead with place and product
Taproom atmosphere, the food menu, upcoming events and close-ups of the beer or spirit itself make strong creative without showing anyone drinking it.
Events instead of prizes
Trivia nights, release parties and bands on the patio draw a crowd; giveaways cannot award alcohol, so prizes stay as merchandise, tours or food.
Merch priced to cover cost
ABC rules bar licensees from handing consumers promotional items worth more than their advertising value, so shirts and glassware get sold at a price that recovers their cost.

Questions and answers
Yes, provided the creative follows ABC Board Rule 20-X-7-.01 and the audience is limited to adults of legal drinking age. Show the beer, the food and the room; avoid images of people drinking, alcohol prizes and anything that could appeal to minors.
It shapes it. Because an Alabama brewpub must operate a restaurant or otherwise provide food, menus and kitchen hours deserve the same prominence as the tap list on your site and map listings.
It is optional. The rule says proposed advertising may be submitted for approval, and breaking the advertising provisions is a violation either way. For a new format or anything borderline, an early submission can be worth the wait.
