Alcohol Marketing in Milwaukee
Milwaukee's beverage trade still runs on a large scale: Milwaukee County had 19 brewery establishments with 915 employees, three distilleries and 317 bars and taverns in 2023. We market breweries, brewpubs, distilleries, wineries and bars across the metro with age-gated websites, social content, event promotion and campaigns that respect Wisconsin's rules and reach adults ready to visit.
Milwaukee's beverage scene
Brewing by the numbers
The Brewers Association counted 247 craft breweries in Wisconsin in 2025, 14th in the nation, producing 651,660 barrels. Milwaukee County's 19 brewery establishments averaged close to 50 employees apiece in 2023, a sign of how much large-scale brewing remains, and the storage caves at the Miller brewery, begun in 1849, are the oldest surviving structure on that site.
State permits, city licenses
Wisconsin splits alcohol credentials in two. The Department of Revenue issues permits to brewers, brewpubs, wineries, manufacturers and rectifiers, while retail licenses come from the municipality, which in Milwaukee means the City Clerk's License Division. State law caps what a brewpub's group may sell to retailers at 2,000 barrels a year, so many taprooms lean on on-site sales and events.
What beverage brands navigate
Two layers of rules
State permits and city licenses each limit what you sell and where. Event plans, festival booths and promotions need checking against both before anything goes public.
Platform age gates
Ad networks only show alcohol promotions to people of legal drinking age, in approved formats, so targeting and creative both have to pass review before launch.
Tap handles are scarce
With 247 craft breweries statewide, a distinct brand story and loyal regulars decide who gets poured at bars and stocked on store shelves.

Questions and answers
Two levels of government. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue issues producer permits, such as brewer, brewpub, winery and manufacturer permits, and the City of Milwaukee License Division issues retail licenses such as the Class B tavern license. We plan marketing around what your license allows.
Yes, once the right license is in place. In Milwaukee, Class B Special licenses let eligible organizations sell beer and wine at a picnic, festival or similar event, for up to two events in 12 months, and producers follow their own permit rules. After the paperwork is settled, we promote the booth on social, email and your site.
Each platform's alcohol age targeting is switched on, the website has an age gate, placements aimed at younger audiences are excluded, and creative invites people to visit without suggesting the effects responsible alcohol advertising avoids.
