Therapist Marketing in San Francisco
San Francisco County had 258 offices of mental health practitioners in 2023, and 220 of those reported a staff smaller than five, which tells you most local therapy happens in solo and small group practices. Marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, professional clinical counselors, psychologists and group practices here can count on us for specialty websites, search pages for the issues each clinician treats, and intake that protects privacy and follows California's updated advertising rules.

April 2026 BBS ad rules
Amended Board of Behavioral Sciences regulations took effect on April 1, 2026. Every ad by a licensee, including a website or social profile, must show the name on file with the Board, the license number and the license title or an approved abbreviation. Associates must also name their employer and state that a licensed person supervises them, and the word psychology is reserved for licensed psychologists.
Where the details must appear
The Board warns that a license number set in tiny type at the bottom of a long page, or tucked onto a different page, may not comply. Licensees are responsible for ads their employers or group practices create about them. Clinician bios and directory profiles should carry the required details next to each name.
A city of many backgrounds
A third of San Franciscans (34.0 percent) were born abroad, and 43.6 percent of residents five and up regularly use some non-English language when at home, per Census estimates for 2020 through 2024. A clinician fluent in Cantonese, Spanish or Russian, or experienced with a particular community, fills a real gap and should say so up front. In the public system, ZSFG is the city's largest acute psychiatric and rehabilitation hospital.
Filling a caseload ethically
Specific beats general
Give each issue you treat, each group you serve and each method you use its own page; people searching with a clear need then land on the one that fits them.
Privacy from the first click
Contact forms and booking tools should collect minimal details, keep health information away from ad platforms and confirm appointments discreetly.
Associates presented correctly
Group practices must list associates with full registration titles, employer names and supervision statements, never in a way that suggests independent licensure.

Questions and answers
For licensees: your first and last name as filed with the Board, your license number and your license title or an allowed abbreviation such as LMFT, LCSW or LPCC. The details should be easy to find and close together, not buried in a footer or on another page.
Yes, with extra details. Associates must show their registration number and full registration title, the name of their employer, and a statement that they are supervised by a licensed person. Abbreviations like AMFT, ASW or APCC are allowed only alongside the full title.
By being specific and findable. Pages for the issues and populations you work with, a clear statement of languages and approaches, fee and insurance details, and an easy consultation request attract people who are a good fit. Directory profiles help, but your own site should carry the detail.
