Restaurant Marketing in San Francisco
With 1,693 full-service restaurants and 973 limited-service spots counted in 2023, a San Francisco diner never runs short of options. We help restaurants here win the search, the reservation and the second visit: websites with current menus and hours, Google and maps work, social and paid campaigns aimed at neighbors and visitors, and guest lists that remember birthdays and nudge first-timers to come back.
Placards, payroll rules and 23.7 million visitors
Mid-sized dining rooms
More than half of the county's full-service restaurants, 898 of 1,693, had ten or more employees in 2023, and 475 had between ten and nineteen. Operations that size juggle payroll, reservations and promotion at once, so automated confirmations, review invitations and email campaigns take real work off a manager's desk.
Rules diners can see
Each restaurant must post its green, yellow or red Department of Public Health placard in public view; yellow means two or more major violations were found and fixed during the routine inspection, with a re-inspection to follow. Some restaurants add a surcharge to cover Health Care Security Ordinance costs. The City neither requires nor bans it, but surcharge money must go to covered employees' health care.
Convention crowds downtown
Moscone Center expects 38 events and more than 674,000 room nights in 2026, up from 34 events in 2025, according to San Francisco Travel. Dining rooms near downtown, SoMa and the waterfront can schedule search and social pushes around those weeks, when out-of-town groups are choosing where to eat.
Where restaurants lose covers
Listings out of date
Wrong hours or an old menu online send guests to the place next door. Keeping Google, Yelp and your own site in agreement is basic work that is easy to let slide.
Reviews from every table
Give every guest a review invitation, on the receipt, a table card or a follow-up email, and answer each one. Steady volume beats an occasional burst.
Chain openings take longer
Restaurant groups with eleven or more other outlets worldwide need Conditional Use Authorization in neighborhood commercial districts, so grand opening campaigns should allow for the hearing calendar.

Questions and answers
Fix the issues, pass the re-inspection and keep your online presence accurate. A yellow placard means two or more major violations were corrected during the routine inspection. If reviewers mention it, reply briefly and factually about what changed; avoid arguing in public.
No. The Office of Labor Standards Enforcement says the City neither requires nor prohibits surcharges tied to the Health Care Security Ordinance. Restaurants that do add one must report surcharge collections and health spending each year and spend any excess on covered employees' health care.
Be easy to find near Moscone and the hotels when attendees search. Accurate maps listings, group dining pages, reservation links and geo-targeted ads during show weeks reach people deciding on dinner. San Francisco Travel's event calendar helps set the timing.
It can. Shared Spaces allows sidewalk, parking lane and other outdoor seating, and visible tables draw passersby. Add outdoor seating to your listings and photos, mention heaters or cover if you have them, and register the space under the City's rules first.
