Restaurant Marketing in Richmond

Every check at a Richmond restaurant carries the city's 7.5 percent meals tax, and those collections reached about $52 million in fiscal 2023, a rough gauge of how much the city eats out. We help independent restaurants and hospitality groups compete for that spending with fast menu pages, map listings that rank, social campaigns, reservation and ordering links, and guest lists that bring regulars back.

What the meals tax reveals

The city's meals tax applies to food, alcoholic drinks and non-optional gratuities, and the City Auditor found it supplied close to 8 percent of the city's general government taxes in fiscal 2023. On-time filers keep a 3 percent seller's commission. Restaurants inside the city line are competing for a slice of spending the city tracks closely.

Cocktail rules changed in 2026

Virginia ABC has long required mixed beverage restaurants to earn at least 45 percent of the relevant sales from food and nonalcoholic drinks. Under HB 975, effective July 1, 2026, a restaurant whose monthly food sales reach $48,000 is exempt, and one with $25,000 to just under $48,000 in monthly food sales faces a 30 percent ratio. Menus and promotions should reflect which tier you are in.

Summer brings the crowds

Metro jobs in leisure and hospitality rose about 15 percent from February to June 2026, from roughly 64,900 to 74,600, as the warm season arrived (BLS, not seasonally adjusted). We weight ad budgets toward the warm months and use loyalty offers, catering and private events to steady the slower ones.

Questions and answers

Complete and accurate listings, real photos, current hours and menus, and a steady flow of reviews you respond to. A fast website with a text menu supports the listing, and local landing pages help with catering and private dining searches.

If you hold a mixed beverage license, possibly. Since July 1, 2026, restaurants with high monthly food sales are exempt from the food ratio and a middle tier faces a lower 30 percent ratio. That can change how hard you push drink specials versus food promotions, so we plan campaigns around your tier.

Spring and summer, when patios, events and visitors drive traffic and metro hospitality employment peaks. Slower winter months suit catering, gift cards, private events and loyalty offers aimed at regulars.
