Building in Hennepin County

What the state licenses

A Minnesota residential building contractor or remodeler license is mandatory, the Department of Labor and Industry says, whenever a company sells a homeowner work in two or more of eight special skills on a house with four or fewer units. The skill list runs from excavation and masonry through carpentry, finishing and roofing. New construction calls for the building contractor version, while remodelers stay with existing structures. Commercial firms and subcontractors register with DLI rather than license, and since July 1, 2023, companies selling home solar installations must hold the residential license.

Builders large and small

The 2023 County Business Patterns count shows 104 new single-family builders, 150 commercial and institutional builders employing 3,817 people and 201 electrical contractors in Hennepin County. For licensed residential firms, the qualifying person must complete 14 hours of approved continuing education to renew, including at least one hour on the energy code and one on business management, which makes a credentials page easy to keep current.

Contractor marketing priorities

01

Portfolio by project type

Case pages for additions, custom homes, tenant build-outs or small multifamily work, each with scope, photos and the neighborhood or suburb, give owners proof that matches the project they have in mind.

02

The right license letters

DLI license numbers start with BC for building contractors and CR for remodelers, and the department points out that a contractor registration is not a license. Display the correct number prominently.

03

Every bid tracked

A pipeline that logs every bid, revision and decision date, with reminders to check in, so promising projects do not drift away while crews are busy on current jobs.

Questions and answers

Per the Department of Labor and Industry, any company selling a homeowner work in more than one special skill, say framing and drywall, on a property of one to four units. People who build or renovate homes they own in order to resell them, or on speculation, need the license as well.

No. DLI says commercial contractors, and subcontractors who do not contract with the homeowner, register through its Construction Contractor Registration Program instead of holding the residential license. City permits and any trade licenses still apply to the work itself.

With specifics: project photos with scope and location, schedules you met, references, license and insurance details, and reviews requested from every customer. Leave out claims you cannot back up, and let detailed case pages do the persuading.
