Food & Drink Marketing in San Jose

Visitors spent $2.8 billion in San Jose in 2024, by Visit San Jose's count, and residents can pick from more than 3,300 restaurants countywide. We help restaurants, cafes, bakeries, bars, breweries, wineries, caterers and packaged food brands earn that attention with fast menu sites, map visibility, social campaigns timed to downtown events, and guest lists that turn a single dinner into a standing habit.

San Jose context

The local appetite

Visitors and conventions

Team San Jose, the City's destination marketing organization, reports 21.2 million visitors in 2024, $3.7 billion in total economic impact from tourism and about 23,000 jobs supported. It also manages the McEnery Convention Center, the California Theatre and the Center for the Performing Arts. Convention attendees and theatergoers search for dinner near the venue, which rewards restaurants whose hours and menus online are accurate.

Thousands of competitors

Santa Clara County had 1,703 full-service and 1,609 limited-service restaurants in 2023, employing about 59,700 people between them, plus 130 bars, 11 breweries and 34 wineries. Accommodation and food services businesses in San Jose city alone sold $3.38 billion in 2022, per the Economic Census. In a field that size, being easy to find and easy to order from decides a great deal.

Faster permits for new kitchens

The City's Streamlined Restaurant Program can cut building tenant improvement permits for qualifying food and beverage projects to as little as one to two months, compared with four to six, at no added review charge. It covers restaurants, bars, cafes, boba tea shops, ice cream shops, caterers and ghost kitchens in tenant spaces generally under 3,000 square feet. A shorter build-out means pre-opening marketing has to start sooner.

Small details diners judge

01

The placard in the window

Every Santa Clara County kitchen that prepares food displays a colored placard from its latest inspection. Diners notice, and a clean record is worth featuring in photos and posts.

02

Text menus beat PDFs

A PDF menu that loads slowly loses hungry searchers. Text menus with dietary notes and ordering links work better and help search engines understand the food too.

03

Timing around events

Convention weeks, theater nights and sports crowds downtown shift demand by the hour. Ads and posts scheduled around them reach people while they are deciding.

Questions and answers

Before the doors open. If the City's Streamlined Restaurant Program shortens tenant improvement permits to one or two months, the gap between signing a lease and serving guests can be brief. A simple site, a map listing and a waitlist sign-up should be live while construction is still underway.

Make catering easy to buy: a dedicated page with sample menus, headcount minimums and lead times, a short inquiry form and fast replies. Office campuses and convention groups plan ahead, so search ads for catering terms and follow-up with past event customers are both worth testing.

Not yet. The County's placarding and scoring program applies to facilities that prepare food, such as restaurants, cafes, bakeries, delis and corporate cafeterias, and the Department of Environmental Health says mobile food facilities, caterers and limited food activities will be included in the future.
